In the weeks leading up to the 90th Oscars on Sunday, March 4, we’ll take a look at our rich Academy Award history by sharing from the 20th Century Fox Archives.
This year, Fox Searchlight’s “The Shape of Water” is nominated for Production Design (production design: Paul Denham Austerberry; set decoration: Shane Vieau and Jeffrey A. Melvin), and 20th Century Fox’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” is nominated for Visual Effects (Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett, Dan Lemmon and Joel Whist).
At the 39th Academy Awards held on April 10, 1967, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, “Fantastic Voyage,” shot in CinemaScope Color, won for Art Direction (Color) (art direction: Jack Martin Smith and Dale Hennesy; set decoration: Walter M. Scott and Stuart A. Reiss). The 1966 Fox film also won the category for Best Special Visual Effects (Art Cruickshank) and was recognized that year with nominations in Cinematography (Color) (Ernest Laszlo), Film Editing (William B. Murphy) and Sound Effects (Walter Rossi).
Please enjoy a special look at the concept art and sets from “Fantastic Voyage.” These assets are pulled from the Photography and Publicity Collection of 20th Century Fox Archives.

The Fox Archives is mandated to collect, catalog, preserve and make accessible the following assets of the 20th Century Fox studios: props, set decoration, photographs, art department and publicity materials from our film and television productions, and from the 20th Century Fox studio itself. We work primarily with internal Fox groups but also from time to time with outside organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
