The Caped Crusader made his feature film debut 50 years ago in “Batman,” produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox Film. The superhero movie was released on July 30, 1966, in Austin, Texas. Here are the original publicity posters, including those for French, German and British audiences:
In “Batman” (also referred to as “Batman: The Movie”), the titular character and his sidekick, Robin, face off against four formidable foes – Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman – who have a dehydrator that can transform humans into dust.
The cast, which featured many of the cast members for the original “Batman” television show, included Adam West, Burt Ward, Cesar Romano, Burgess Meredith, Frank Gorshin and Lee Meriweather. Leslie H. Martinson directed the film and Lorenzo Semple Jr. wrote the screenplay.
The Fox Archives is mandated to collect, catalog, preserve and make accessible the following assets of the 20th Century Fox studios: props, set decoration, photographs, art department and publicity materials from our film and television productions, and from the 20th Century Fox studio itself. We work primarily with internal Fox groups but also from time to time with outside organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
