The publicity collection in the Fox Archives dates back to 1915 and contains some of our oldest material. The below images are glass slides from the William Fox years.
Each asset is about 3 inches by 4 inches and the dates range from 1916-1929. The colors that you see were hand painted onto the glass to make the images stand out. They were likely used to advertise upcoming movies and each has a small area where the date, showtimes and theater could be written in. The slide would then be projected onto the theater’s screen to pique the interest of the crowd, much like today’s trailers do, but without the extravagance that can accompany them.
We are quite lucky that these exist in the collection, especially since glass is such a delicate medium. They are some of my favorite assets, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

The Fox Archives is mandated to collect, catalog, preserve and make accessible the following assets of the 20th Century Fox studios: props, set decoration, photographs, art department and publicity materials from our film and television productions, and from the 20th Century Fox studio itself. We work primarily with internal Fox groups but also from time to time with outside organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
