William Shakespeare’s classic play was modernized when the film “Romeo + Juliet” hit theaters on Nov. 1, 1996. Produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox Film, the drama/romance starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the title characters and was directed by Baz Luhrmann. It debuted at No. 1 and went on to gross more than $147 million worldwide.
