National Geographic magazine Editor-in-Chief Susan Goldberg and guest editor Mary McCartney co-hosted the evening celebrating female photographers
Earlier this week, Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic magazine and Editorial Director of National Geographic Partners Susan Goldberg and National Geographic magazine guest editor Mary McCartney hosted a dinner in West London to gather and celebrate female photographers. Deborah Armstrong, EVP of National Geographic Partners Europe & Africa, served as the evening’s EU host.
A number of female photographers attended the special dinner, including Britta Jacinski, co-founder of Photographers Against Wildlife Crime; Gail Jenkinson, a British underwater camerawoman; Anastasia Taylor-Lind, a National Geographic Magazine contributor and photojournalist whose work depicts women living in the hardships of their surroundings; and Evgenia Arbugaeva, an award-winning photographer who was born in the town of Tiksi, located in the Russian Arctic. Other guests included Tania Fares, contributing editor for British Vogue; BBC Radio 4 Today Programme Editor Sarah Sands; Lily Cole, English model, actress and entrepreneur; and Mala Gaonkar, co-founder of the Surgo Foundation.
Susan and Mary opened the evening with a Q&A, during which they discussed a number of Mary’s passions – the environment, animals and photography among them. Guests were served a vegetarian feast in honor of National Vegetation Day.
For the October issue of the U.K. National Geographic magazine, which went on sale on Oct. 3, Mary traveled to Snowdonia to capture the wild ponies in the Welsh mountains. The issue includes Mary’s feature on wild ponies inspired by Alejandro, a horse her father purchased and that she has ridden for years.
“When I was asked to guest-edit, I was so hugely honoured and I had to say yes immediately,” Mary said at the dinner. “Thank you for sending me on that adventure. It’s something I would never have done otherwise.”
Mary guest-edited the U.K. National Geographic magazine’s October issue as part of the ambitious new Guest Editor program launched in January this year exclusively for the U.K. National Geographic magazine to mark the magazine’s 130th anniversary. Working in collaboration with Susan, 12 notable British figures are taking turns guest-editing each of the monthly issues throughout 2018.
Other guest editors include Dame Ellen MacArthur, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Emmy Award-winning actor Archie Panjbi and Sir Mo Farrah.
