Dear Mrs. Doubtfire…

November 22nd marks the 25th anniversary of “Mrs. Doubtfire.” The Chris Columbus-directed feature from 20th Century Fox was based on the novel “Alias Madame Doubtfire.”

Robin Williams is responsible for introducing the cinematic world to the iconic Euphegenia Doubtfire, a refined British nanny ostensibly well-versed in childcare, housekeeping and the culinary arts. Underneath the assortment of woolen cardigans, hair and makeup and oversized glasses, Williams also portraited Daniel Hillard, a father trying desperately to maintain a connection with his children shortly after a difficult divorce.

Williams’ brilliance and range shine throughout the film with moments of genuine heartfelt emotion and incredible comedic improvisation. The film rounds out its cast with Sally Fields as Hillard’s ex-wife; Pierce Brosnan as the new beau; and Lisa Jakub, Mara Wilson and Matthew Lawrence as the Hillard children.

“Mrs. Doubtfire” went on to win an Academy Award for Makeup, as well as a Golden Globe for Williams. But perhaps the greatest acclamation is the films continued affection by fans worldwide. To help celebrate this jubilant anniversary, here are some rare and never-before-seen photographs from the Fox Archives.

The Fox Archives is mandated to collect, catalog, preserve and make accessible the following assets of the 20th Century Fox studios: props, set decoration, photographs, art department and publicity materials from our film and television productions, and from the 20th Century Fox studio itself. We work primarily with internal Fox groups but also from time to time with outside organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
