Jimmy Hsu and Nien Hsiu Li, along with three other directors from Taiwan, completed the program on Sept. 20
The inaugural Fox Creative Lab: Taiwan 2018 began in May with the selection of participating directors and producers from Taiwan. That four-month intensive course concluded last week, and Fox Networks Group Asia announced that it is awarding development deals to two of the participants: Jimmy Hsu and Nien-Hsiu Li. Fox Creative Lab is an extension of the 21st Century Fox Global Inclusion talent development initiatives and aims to strengthen the pipeline of original storytellers for FNGA and increase the diversity of ideas in Asia’s film and TV industry.

On Sept. 20, the five fellows pitched their original ideas to a jury, which comprised Melvin Mar, executive producer of 20th Century Fox TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Speechless”; Philip Rosenthal, writer/producer of “Everybody Loves Raymond”; and Jason Hsueh, an award-winning Taiwanese TV producer. FNGA’s Keertan Adyanthaya, EVP, Content & Communications; Cora Yim, SVP, Head of Chinese Entertainment and Original Productions; and Claire Liu, VP, Chinese Entertainment, Taiwan were also part of the jury.

Jimmy and Nien-Hsiu completed the program alongside Laha Chen, Howard Cheng and Charles Sun, who will receive first-look agreements with FNGA to option their original and new scripts.
Jimmy’s winning project, “The Fourth Victim,” is a crime/mystery drama that follows an Asperger’s forensic scientist’s investigation into a serial suicide. Nien-Hsiu’s winning project, “Loser Guitar Hero,” is a comedy drama that centers on a 40-year-old struggling electric guitarist whose life is disrupted when his 11-year-old niece, an internet celebrity, moves in with him.
