In the weeks leading up to the 90th Oscars on Sunday, March 4, we’ll take a look at our rich Academy Award history by sharing from our 20th Century Fox Archives.
This year, three actors from Fox Searchlight productions are nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell are nominated for their roles in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and Richard Jenkins is nominated for his performance in “The Shape of Water.”
In 1986, former 20th Century Fox contract player Don Ameche won an Oscar in this category for his portrayal of Art Selwyn in the science-fiction/fantasy film “Cocoon.” His performance, alongside veteran actors Hume Cronyn, Wilford Brimley, Maureen Stapleton, Jessica Tandy and Gwen Verdon, earned him his first and only Oscar win. “Cocoon” also won an Oscar that year for Best Visual Effects.

The Fox Archives is mandated to collect, catalog, preserve and make accessible the following assets of the 20th Century Fox studios: props, set decoration, photographs, art department and publicity materials from our film and television productions, and from the 20th Century Fox studio itself. We work primarily with internal Fox groups but also from time to time with outside organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
