In the weeks leading up to the 90th Oscars on Sunday, March 4, we’ll take a look at our rich Academy Award history by sharing from the 20th Century Fox Archives.
This year for the 90th Academy Awards, Guillermo del Toro is nominated for his achievement in directing and Dan Laustsen is nominated for his achievement in cinematography for their work on “The Shape of Water.”
On February 4, 2013, at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony, Ang Lee won the award for Best Director and Claudio Miranda won the award for Cinematography for their work together on “Life of Pi.”
The cinematic achievement of “Life of Pi” exemplifies the collective efforts of a team of visual and audio artists. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and took home four. In addition to Best Director and Best Cinematographer, “Life of Pi” also won for Best Visual Effects (Erik-Jan de Boer, Donald R. Elliott, Guillaume Rocheron, and Bill Westenhofer) and Best Original Score (Mychael Danna).

The Fox Archives is mandated to collect, catalog, preserve and make accessible the following assets of the 20th Century Fox studios: props, set decoration, photographs, art department and publicity materials from our film and television productions, and from the 20th Century Fox studio itself. We work primarily with internal Fox groups but also from time to time with outside organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry.
