On Nov. 1, 21CF and the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) hosted the first event in a new national security-themed film and television series in Washington, D.C., featuring the first two episodes of National Geographic’s limited series “The Long Road Home,” based on the best-selling book by ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz.
Ahead of the screening, U.S. Representatives Jim Banks (R-IN) and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), both military veterans, joined Martha and Gen. Peter Chiarelli (Ret. Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army) for a panel discussion moderated by Phillip Carter (Senior Fellow and Director of the Military, Veterans, and Society Program at CNAS).
Congressman Banks, who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014, said, “Hearing those IED blasts and knowing that someone I served next to was killed…are the moments I’ll live with for the rest of my life. Those names of the men who never came home will stay with me forever.”
Speaking about the launch of the new screening series, 21CF EVP of Public Affairs Chip Smith said, “At 21CF, our goal is to produce content that not only entertains, but also educates and inspires our audiences. Through this partnership with CNAS, we hope to use our programming to shine a spotlight on issues of war and peace and spur substantive discussion of policy solutions to improve national security and protect those who serve.”
“The Long Road Home” premieres on Tuesday, Nov. 7, on National Geographic.
