At the inaugural Variety Dealmakers breakfast in New York City this morning, 21st Century Fox Executive Chairman Lachlan Murdoch talked about a wide range of topics, including the importance of sustaining a healthy workplace culture.
“Culture is something that has to inform leadership decisions every day,” Lachlan told Cynthia Littleton, Variety’s managing editor of television, during his keynote conversation. “When you unearth things that don’t fit the culture you are trying to have or want to have, you have to address it ruthlessly and, unfortunately, in many cases very publicly.”
He also talked about the transformational era the industry finds itself in, one that 21CF is taking advantage of by making its programming available on digital MVPD services. “We’re in the beginning of an incredible transformation… we’re in the first months of something that will have a multi-decade life and future. Businesses that have large data sets and robust data sets will be the companies that win in the future.”
Lachlan reiterated his thoughts on the current state of theatrical windows by saying that the industry “has to change” and put the consumer first. He predicted that a new model could arrive in the next 6-12 months.
